Number Days Sim Date took 6 months to make and was a project I worked on during my first year of college. Some aesthetic inspiration came from Persona 4 and The World Ends With You/It's a Wonderful World.
Early concept sketch and in-game graphic of the map. The castle-like building was supposed to be a hotel. That idea was scrapped when it was decided to make the character's energy based on the battery life of their phones instead.
Detailing areas the user can go to.
Early concept sketch of Evelyn. I knew I wanted her to have a ponytail even before sketching but I just wanted to see how a short bob would have looked.
Revised sketch and in-game sprites of Evelyn. She reminds me of Mato/Black Rock Shooter.
Concept sketch and in-game sprites of Thane.
Concept sketch and in-game sprites of Spencer.
Concept sketch and in-game sprites of Bryce. The sweater vest added color to his outfit (Sorry Cashy)
Concept sketch and in-game sprites of Lena. Her name is pronounced "LEE-na". Decided to avoid using buttons because they looked old fashioned.
Concept sketch and in-game sprites of Arlo. Didn't have solid visual idea for him early on into the project. Almost included a bowtie in his final design but scrapped it because I thought it would make him stand out too much compared to the others.
Poor concept sketch doodled on the margin of my class notes and in-game sprites of Cashy.
CG sketches and in-game graphics.
Sketch and in-game graphics of the menu. Had to create separate sections for all of the content because there was too much to display just on one screen.
Some dev notes including notes for the map, items, relationship status, etc.
Dev notes on gifts.
Dev notes on cut-scenes and events.
August 26, 2012 is the date displayed on the phones in this game- it's also the day this project began development.
Evelyn's friends Nicole and Chrissy that appear in Ending 1 are based off of two of my real life friends.
The decision to make Arlo a tree spirit/dryad came in the middle of development after finding out that the Spanish origin of his name means "barberry tree".
The scene where Arlo drops Bryce's phone originally planned to have Arlo drop Spencer's phone. Bryce was used instead because he is a character that thinks about people's emotions- and I wanted someone to question Arlo's attitude on his "missing phone".
Ending 8 was added in on a whim during the final week of development. Originally, even if Arlo was not a love interest- a user would see Ending 7 if they got 100 happy points and went home. Ending 8 was added because Ending 7 felt too somber.
The graphic of the hand holding the phone was created by taking a picture of my hand holding a phone and tracing the photo. (I wish I still had this photo saved somewhere)
